Bunion Treatment Options in Wayne, NJ

The term “bunion” generally refers to a joint deformity of the big toe, often marked by a bump on the outside of the big toe joint, and/or another bump on the second toe, and caused by abnormal contact with the big toe. They do not always require treatment, but there are many bunion treatment options available.

We are pleased to treat clients in Wayne as well as Pompton Lakes, Franklin Lakes, Oakland, NJ, Wyckoff, Fair Lawn, Midland Park, North Haledon, West Caldwell, and Paterson.
Bunions can be caused by wearing tight shoes, the genetic structure of your foot, medical conditions such as arthritis, or stress on your foot caused by injuries or the manner in which you walk or stand. You may be able to reduce your risk of bunions by wearing low-heeled shoes that fit properly with no tightness.

Symptoms of Bunions

Bunions can cause a bulge or bump on the base of your big or little toe; as well as swelling, redness, or soreness; corns and calluses; pain; and restricted movement of the toes. If you think you have a bunion, we can identify it with a simple non-intrusive examination which may be followed by an X-ray to determine cause and severity.

Best Bunion Treatment

Bunions don’t always require treatment, but if they cause pain, reduced movement, difficulty finding shoes that fit, or visible bumps on your toe joints, it is a good idea to make an appointment with our podiatry practice. If left untreated, they can cause bursitis, hammertoe, or metatarsalgia.

Non-Surgical Bunion Treatment

We may recommend simple steps such as changing your shoes, using over-the-counter bunion pads and tape, anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen, padded shoe inserts or arch supports, or simply applying ice.

Bunion Surgery in Wayne, NJ

If your bunions are interfering with your everyday life, we may recommend surgery. There are many surgical techniques such as removing swollen tissue from around the toe joint, removing part of the bone to straighten the toe joint, permanently joining the bones in the affected joint, or realigning the long bone between the back of the foot and the toe to straighten the abnormal angle of the toe joint.

You may be able to walk shortly after the procedure, but a full recovery can take weeks or months and in order to prevent recurrence, you will need to wear wide, comfortable shoes even after recovering. In addition to Wayne, we also provide surgical services to patients in Pompton Lakes, Franklin Lakes, Oakland, NJ, Wyckoff, Fair Lawn, Midland Park, North Haledon, West Caldwell, and Paterson.
